Best wishes and Prayers for Australia

As many of you probably know by now my sister, Laurel lives in Australia and checks in on this blog regularly. Australia has experienced 12 years of drought and still has 12 fires burning out of control. The last email I received from my sis said that whole towns have burned and over 650 homes. The number of lives lost is still unknown. A State of Emergency has been declared. I'm saying a prayer for Australia tonight. Stay safe sis! Here are some of the pictures Laurel sent to me.

Oh my gosh- those fire pictures are horrific.
They're saying arson is the cause. So senseless and tragic!

Hi sis...thank you for the prayers.
So many dead, so many towns destroyed...like some macabre rollcall: Narbethong, gone. Marysville, gone. Kinglake (about 35 miles from Melbourne), gone. Callignee, gone. Glenburne, gone. and many more small settlements and towns. By the time we were looking at the paper each morning, it was already out of date, and behind. Over 750 homes gone. so, 183 dead. Many more missing. People, sometimes whole families, have been found in homes and cars. There was no time to flee, the fire moved at 120 km an hour much of the time.
Two of the fires are suspected arsons.
The koala saved has been dubbed Sam, it's a female. She is in the hands of wildlife carers now.
There are many stories of heros and tragedies and triumphs. The Australian people have raised $50 million dollars, and this does not include the corporate or gov't donations.

I'll tell you something, many local councils will come under scrutiny for allowing people to clear trees from their properties.
Right now, we have some breathing space, no urgent threats to towns at this particular moment, but as we have seen, this can change in an instant. They are worried about the Healsville (wildlife sanctuary area...we honeymooned there) and the Bunyip (state park forest) fires merging. All the prayers the firefighters and victims can get are appreciated.

sigh..edit:
councils have NOT allowed people to clear trees from their properties. It was just dry fuel for the fire.

Prayers said for all of Australia as they sorrow for all that is lost. We have terrible wildfires in California, too, and continue to be in a drought, too. As horrible and damaging as ours have been the past few years, they don't approach the magnitude of loss and tragedy that the dear people of Australia have suffered. The pictures Laurel sent bring tears to my eyes. I'm amazed/disgusted that people weren't allowed to clear trees. Here, it's mandatory that people in high fire danger areas keep brush and such clear from homes and buildings.

Prayers and love sent to Australia!
