Phase two of the kitchen remodel has begun....the fridge wall. I have not shared this ugly side of my kitchen. Because it is UGLY. In the beginning we had a very small kitchen with the fridge next to the stove. In the picture above you can see the ugly fridge that Id love to replace. Unfortunately I'm on a budget so this fridge stays as long as it lives. Lets hope it lives awhile longer! I must say its very strange to look at this old picture now. Things look a bit different around here. Okay enough staling! We moved the fridge away from the stove so that the stove could be centered on that wall. Leaving space for two cabinets on either side of it.The fridge was moved here...You can see a bit of it over on the left. Do you see it? Yes! This is where it has been for ten months while we worked on the rest of the kitchen.
Up until this week....this is how it looked. The Sheetrock that you see on the right is where we walled up the door to the old pantry. First thing on the list was the layout. Once that was done we needed to move some electrical wiring.
Hubby was able to pull up the wires to the new boxes without destroying all the sheet rock. No mess....making me very happy!
Then it was off to Lowe's to purchase a pantry unit and a 36 inch base cabinet.
My fridge is counter depth and will one day be replaced with a larger french door counter depth fridge. The pantry unit is 24 inches deep. In order to achieve a built in look and level the cabinet on a wall that was not straight we attached 2x4s vertically along the studs. The 2x4s were leveled with shims and the pantry was attached to the 2x4s with screws. The pantry doors swing the wrong way but that's an easy fix. The fridge door also swings the wrong way and needs to be fixed too. Its on the list!
As you can see from the picture below the pantry is receiving the TREATMENT. Saving money means elbow grease. Ive removed the doors, sanded, filled the grain with wood putty, sanded again and now I'm ready to prime.
The 36 inch base unit is barely visible to the left in this picture. The boxing in of the fridge will continue on a day that's not raining cats and dogs!

I love your remodeling posts Kat! It's looking great & will be finished in no time! ♥ Diane
looking good sis! I have been wondering when we'd get to see this side of the kitchen :)
you guys are doing a fantastic job, as usual. looking forward to the finished product! as for the covered over pantry area:
so you're just going to have unused space inside the wall?
I love it! Kat, you have a vision and you keep on plodding away until it's done. Looking good!
It's really looking good, Kat. You and Len do such good work. I'll bet your happy to have your bookshelf back, too!
Very smart design, moving the fridge and adding the built-in cabinets, Kat! I know you thought and planned this all out in meticulous detail. You have to be an expert sander/primer/painter by now! Think you'll miss it when the kitchen's finished? ducking!
Looks great :)
Yay!! You're starting the final phase. Well I think it's the final one. Anyway I know you've been wanting to get this wall done. It's going to look great just like the rest. You guys do such a classy job, even on a budget.
And those pictures of the fires in Australia are amazing! Are they still burning? Such a tradgedy and we hardly hear anything on our network news about it.
Ceci
What a project! I bet it is going to look great when it is done!
hi Cecile..
yes, the fires are still burning. They have, for the most part been contained. Today is supposed to be another hot one (about 100 degrees) with north winds (north winds here are HOT) blowing. That's a worry, and many towns are on alert, all state and national parks are closed. we're just keeping our fingers crossed, a cool change is due this evening which ia a good thing.
We're in better shape than we were a couple of weeks ago, but not out of the danger zone yet.

Wow, Kat--more progress?! Now I'm REALLY starting to feel like a slug! lol! Your kitchen looks really great! Happy painting! :)
Hey Diane...I have a couple days off in a row and will be by your blog tomorrow bright and early. At the rate Im going this remodel will be a year in the making!
Hi sis...the old pantry will become part of the front hall closet. Next year we will remove the wall seperating the hall closet from the pantry. Enlarge the opening on the closet and install bifold doors.
Thank you PG...plodding is a very good word for what Im doing. lol!
Hi Lisa...yes I will be very happy to have that bookshelf back. Im still thinking about whitewashing it or staining it dark brown. lol!
ROFL...ROSE!! Yes Im going to miss primer in my hair and sawdust all over my house!
Thank you Felicia! Im glad you stopped by.
Ceci...it depends on how long the list is for phase two. lol...I like my list to be ten items at most. They tend to grow. My sis has answered your questions about the fires.
Thanks Jen...I sure hope so. We are on the home stretch now.
Well Ms. Sharon...youve been a tad busy traveling and working on other peoples houses! I am waiting to see what happens next at your house. Thanks for stopping by.
Gosh, I love that Suzy Bogus song, gets me every time. I am glad you are on to Facebook. I can't add you because I don't know your last name. So if you search for me, you'll find me and I would be happy to add you. :) P.S. Love the kitchen updates, the built ins are wonderful. We started on the downstairs renovations and have all the subfloors in with exception of one room. Yeah!
It's coming along Kat, I have really been enjoying the transformation. You'll be finished before you know it. Looking forward to more updates.
Thanks, I added you! :)
